Over 600 people took part in the Darkness Into Light fundraising event on Saturday, May 7th.
A unique early morning experience, the event seen hundreds of people gather outside Diamond Dental Clinic to walk or run the 5k route, whilst dawn was breaking.
Pieta House, the suicide and self-harm charity, in association with The Niamh Louise Foundation, brought the event to Cookstown with Electric Ireland for a second year.
We here at Diamond Dental Clinic were on-hand before the walk to help participants register and get their t-shirts to wear for the event, whilst helping out with stewarding and ensuring everyone received some well deserved refreshments after.
The action kicked off in the darkness at 4.15am, with excited runners and walkers (some of the four legged kind) setting off. There was a great atmosphere as everyone was supporting and encouraging each other throughout, with passing traffic even showing their support with beeps and waves.
With the runners making their way to the finishing line, the first signs of morning were appearing. By the time the walkers were coming in, dawn was breaking, symbolising the purpose of the walk; Darkness In Light.
Afterwards, refreshments went down a treat, with everyone gathering to talk and share stories.
Speaking about the Cookstown event, Brian Higgins, CEO of the charity said, “We are really delighted Darkness Into Light was in Cookstown for a second year. I’m very grateful to the committee here in Cookstown and the Niamh Lousie Foundation for their support. The extraordinary growth of Darkness Into Light, even in just the past year, is an example of how Darkness Into Light is uniting people across the globe in solidarity with those who suffer. While suicide is a devastating tragedy, we must not forget that there is hope, there is help and Pieta House will be there to provide both.”
